January 8, 2015Controversial DNA sequencing company 23andMe announced the first of 10 deals to be signed with large biotech and pharma firms on Tuesday January 6. Their $60 million partnership with Genentech will focus on Parkinson’s Research.
The Google Venture-backed start-up, run by Sergey Brin’s wife Anne Wojcicki, will received $10 million as an upfront payment with the additional cash dependent on the company reaching certain research milestones.
Having recruited over 12,000 Parkinson’s patients with the help of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, 23andMe and Genentech look to use this wealth of genetic data to discover novel medicines for patients suffering from the degenerative disorder.
