We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Business Development Management role with a leading British supplier of life sciences laboratory reagents. This is a permanent position that can be based anywhere in the UK.
PURPOSE
The Senior Business Development Manager will be responsible for the development of partnerships with university technology transfer offices worldwide with the aim of expanding the Company’s reagents’ portfolio. In addition, the Senior BDM will be responsible for the management of the existing reagent portfolio and the creation of new business opportunities with university partners, research institutions and commercial organisations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managing key university accounts, developing new leads and negotiation and management of new deals with universities and other research institutions worldwide
- Identifying and liaising with inventing scientists and technology transfer offices to identify, assess and characterise new materials for inclusion in the Company’s portfolio
- Responsible for the identification, due diligence, evaluation, appropriation and commercialisation of life science reagents and research material opportunities
- Overall responsibility for the Company’s portfolio of materials including quality control and the updating and posting of technical information on the various databases and website
- Accountable for meeting annual portfolio and revenue targets through existing accounts and new business development, including post-contract management
- Responsible for full licence management including monitoring expiry dates and pro-actively engaging with partners to manage renewals, terminations, sourcing, etc
- Leadership and day-to-day management of junior members of the product acquisition teams, to likely include line management, career development, appraisals, and performance management.
- Responsible for continuous improvement of the product acquisition process, with specific focus on improving ‘transactional efficiency’
- Assisting with addressing enquiries relating to the technical performance of the Company’s research tools for assigned accounts
- Processing of licensing enquiries, ensuring leads are followed up in a timely fashion
- The preparation of business reports, budgets and meeting agendas
- Completing commercial licences, developing new business leads and negotiation, execution and management of new deals with life science reagent companies, pharma and biotech
- Develop and maintain a broad range of external relationships (universities, companies, scientists etc)
- Monitor and analyse external developments (scientific and commercial) related to the portfolio of reagents
EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- A PhD in a life sciences discipline
- Experience working in or with university technology transfer offices and/or experience in a life science reagents or biotech/pharma (or similar organisation) role
- Practical experience of the application of research tools such as hybridoma cell lines, antibodies, transgenic mice, plasmids, cell lines and small molecules as tool compounds in academic and/or commercial research environments
- Experience in the negotiation of deals and licensing of intellectual property
- Experience in account management, business development, or sales
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills with experience of networking and attendance at scientific conferences
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple and conflicting priorities and deadlines

- Previous experience in a licensing and/or business development role within a technology transfer office desirable
- Excellent negotiation skills with experience of in and out licensing of third party technologies and revenue sharing agreements desirable
- Experience using IP management software such as Inteum or Wellspring desirable
- Experience dealing with the storage, production, and management of biological materials either in-house or via the use of third party vendors desirable
