We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Research & Development Director role with the Cell Biology division of a leading multinational chemicals, biopharmaceutical and biotechnology company. This is a permanent position that can be based out of any of the company’s sites in the Southern United Kingdom.
PURPOSE
Reporting to the SVP of R&D, the R&D Director is accountable for the definition of the innovation pipeline, execution of projects and the monitoring of R&D contributions, including ROI of R&D investment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the identification and implementation of new manufacturing technologies. The R&D Director will work with colleagues in Commercial Development, Marketing and Operations to define the R&D projects and innovation activities that are required to maintain the Company as market leader. The R&D Director will drive, lead and develop the identified technical approach in the area of Cell Biology in order to ensure that the Company stays ahead of the curve.
PURPOSE
- Provide the overall management, technical leadership and direction for the R&D Expression Systems technology focus area (and other defined by the R&D Leadership). Manages development of new technologies and service offerings for the Business Unit according to a priority list of projects that is defined together with the Leadership team
- Ensure that R&D projects are appropriately scoped, including for required technical activities, resources and costs. Ensure that the controls are in place for R&D projects to effectively monitor progress and success. Establish and maintain effective contact and communication in cross functional projects between the relevant technical teams.
- Provides leadership to direct reports through pro-active performance management, mentoring and coaching. Ensure that technical and scientific integrity of the work of the R&D teams under direct reporting is of the required standard and have the right technical skills to deliver the projects. Ensure study design and execution of technical activities to the requirements and standards.
- Drive invention of new IP. Work closely with the Intellectual Property team to maintain awareness of the IP environment for responsible technology focus areas and identify opportunities for novel systems and methods to gain market advantage.
- Maintain an up to date awareness of innovation and technical developments in the industry. Attend and present at key conferences and ensure the involvement in the right collaborations most important for the effective development of new technologies.
- Sets up and decides budgets, projects and resources. Responsibility for achieving the innovation targets.
- Works closely with the R&D BU partners as member of the R&D Leadership team
- Manages International / cross functional development programs
- Provide regular updates on the status of R&D projects. Including progress to plan (and costs) of approved projects
- Future Technologies initiatives (including potential partnering/acquisition targets) and updates on relevant R&D Strategic projects to relevant stakeholders.
EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Master/PHD in biochemistry or biology or equivalent
- At least 10 years’ experience in R&D or production and people management.
- Broad and deep understanding of technology needs and customer base
- Advanced strategic and analytical thinker – allied to an execution mindset.
- Possesses the intellectual ability to think abstractly and creativity to resolve problems and achieve practical results.
- Ability to work in complex and fast-paced matrix environment.
- In-depth commercial understanding of corporate and operational business issues.
- Demonstrated innovative skills and experience leading complex technology projects. High level of communication and presentation skills.
- Must have strong business and interpersonal skills and be a persuasive communicator – written, oral and active listening – to influence peers and colleagues
- The complexity of the projects and /or new product requires a high level of expertise in the relevant field and a broad experience.
- Proven ability to lead, coach and inspire individuals and teams to set and achieve breakthrough performance goals
